What rider qualitities to I need to complete an adventure motorcycle tour?
Most importantly; An open minded easy going nature and a sense of humor! Our tours are all about seeing and doing things that most people will never do and contain elements of challenge and improvisation. You should be satisfied that you are in good health and comfortable with riding long distances on challenging roads. You must be a relatively experienced rider and have done some long distance riding. Generally 200 - 300 miles per day should be well within most experienced riders ability.
Bike and kit
You must have a full motorcycle license and be the legal and registered owner of the motorcycle. All documents for you and the motorcycle must show the same name and address. Your bike must be properly serviced and equipped to carry your luggage. You must have the proper protective riding gear and be willing to wear it at all times when riding. We recommend full protective riding suits with body armor be worn at all times. Approved full face or flip lid helmets of less than five years old. Full waterproofs are also recommended. We don't stop if it rains hard! In reality, most good riding suits offer a decent level of protection and a moderate rain suit could then be sufficient for extra cover.
Luggage
Take less - enjoy more. In my opinion, the less you take the more you'll be able to absorb from the trip! Generally two of most things is enough, one to wear & one to wash. Leave room in your luggage to stow away your jacket & or helmet & you'll enjoy roaming away from the bike more. Leave room in your luggage to bring something back. Remember, there is virtually nothing that can't be obtained anywhere in the world nowadays, often cheaper than the UK!
Documents
A valid passport with at least 10 blank pages for visas and entry stamps, (for trips outside the EU) valid for at least six months beyond tour date. Vehicle registration document. E111 medical card. Available online in 5 minutes!: www.ehic.org.uk. You must provide proof of personal travel insurance, medical and medical evacuation insurance. Motorcycling can be dangerous and you are responsible for your own health and safety and must sign our Waiver of Liability.
Motorcycle Type and Preparation
Bikes should be 500cc or over, in good roadworthy condition and recently serviced. Generally a shaft drive bike will make life easier, Bmw's tend to survive the miles easiest! We recommend that you carry the bikes standard tool kit, spare bulbs and a puncture repair sealant kit. For the EU All motorcycles must have full breakdown and recovery insurance. Most major operators will cover all member EEC countries including every country visited on our ten day eastern Europe tour.
Group Riding
We'll provide all the information that you need to follow the tour route. You are free to ride as a group, with your own buddies or take your own detours. We recommend riding as a group at border crossings beyond western Europe. We will suggest a simple riding system to enable the group to stay in touch when required. It is recommended that all riders carry a mobile phone for emergency support. Satellite navigation is advised for all tours.
What happens if my motorcycle breaks down or I have an accident?
Adventure motorcycling is unpredictable, that's what makes it fun. However by riding as part of a tour group you'll have help close at hand should you need it. You should carry with you enough tools to carry out basic repairs & adjustments. Due to the unpredictable nature of adventure travel it is not viable to cover for all eventualities. We will however assist you in dealing with any problem that arose on the tour, so long as it does not cause the rest of the tour group unreasonable delay or distraction. This may mean for instance that we help with a minor repair, or help assist you arranging onward travel once your bike has been recovered. Should your bike be un repairable we will endeavor to assist you with onward travel and accommodation. It should usually be viable to get your bike repaired and rejoin the tour at a later point.
If your bike can not be repaired, we would assess available options with you, including the option of having your bike recovered home and continuing the tour using a hire vehicle. It is your own responsibility to cover all additional costs and reclaim these in accordance with your travel / breakdown insurance policy terms. Should the tour guide suffer motorcycle breakdown or accident, we would endeavor to rejoin the tour as soon as possible. In incidences where this is not possible, you would need to make your own decisions regarding onward travel or completing the remaining tour. All accommodation is pre-booked for you, in certain circumstances, you may however be required to make certain local payments for accommodation, for which we would reimburse you on your return. We are not able to make refunds for any part of the tour not taken, should you be unable to continue. Your travel insurance should cover these costs for you.
